Easy Black Bean Burgers

There is a big push lately for more plant-based foods in your diet. Not that there is anything unhealthy with eating meat (as some may think based on recent completely un-truthful and biased documentaries…).

But eating more vegetarian meals is both great for your heart, and the environment. In fact, you should aim for at least two plant-based meals each week.

One great vegetarian food to start incorporating more is black beans. Not only are they delicious and nutritious, but they’re also extremely versatile (like in brownies!). It’s both a good source of protein, fiber, and folate. Along with being loaded with tons of other vitamins and minerals.

Easy Black Bean Burgers

These Easy Black Bean Burgers contain only black beans, onions, and spices. They’re extremely simple to make, and don’t require a lot of cooking skills. If your looking for a super fancy, ingredient loaded recipe – these probably aren’t what your looking for. BUT – I am sure the delicious taste and simplicity would surprise you.

To make the burgers – firstly spray a large pan with cooking spray, and heat over medium-high heat. Then add the onion and cook for about 4 minutes, or until translucent. Remove from heat and place the onions in a large bowl.

Meanwhile pat dry the beans with a kitchen or paper towel. Then place in a small blender and pulse until chopped into smaller pieces. I personally prefer to have some black bean chunks – but you can make it as smooth as you wish.

After the beans are blended or chopped – add them to the large mixing bowl, along with the lemon juice, garam masala, paprika, chili powder, and cumin. Mix together until well blended.

Then with clean hands, divide the bean mixture into 3 balls. Flatten into patties and place in the fridge to chill for 10 minutes. You don’t need a binder in this recipe as the beans actually hold together quite nicely. Also, chilling them before frying helps with this process.

Re-coat the large frying pan with cooking spray, and reduce heat to medium. Add the burgers and fry for 4 minutes per side, or until golden. If they start colouring to quickly – turn down the heat. When the burgers are almost cooked, top each with a slice of cheddar cheese (optional – omit if avoiding dairy). And cover with a lid for 2 minutes in order to melt the cheese.

Take an additional frying pan and set over high heat, add the bun halves cut side down. Heat them for about 2 minutes, or until lightly toasted. If your avoiding gluten – make sure to use a gluten free bun.

Once the buns and burgers are done – add 1/2 tbsp light mayonnaise to each bun half, top with black bean burgers and sliced avocado (optional). Also – feel free to add additional burger fixings such as tomato, lettuce, or whatever your heart desires.
