Crispy Baked Sweet Potato Fries

Do you love sweet potato fries? They are simply amazing, and have so much flavour. However, the only downside is that they are usually served deep fried, which is loaded with fat and calories.

I have been playing around with different recipes and ingredients to try and make the perfect crispy oven baked fry, and I finally did it! These Crispy Baked Sweet Potato Fries are sure to be a healthy hit in your household.

Sweet potatoes are an excellent source of vitamin A, which is shown in its vibrant orange color. They are also rich in various vitamins and minerals including vitamin C, manganese, and vitamin B6. Overall they are a very nutritious addition to your diet.

With this in mind we should try and add one orange vegetable into our diet everyday to get the added nutrition benefits.

Crispy Baked Sweet Potato Fries

To make the fries, preheat the oven to 400°F. Then cut the fries to 1/4 inch square slices, and place in large bowl. Sprinkle cornstarch over fries and use your hands to evenly mix over potatoes. Remove fries from bowl and discard any extra cornstarch. Place back in bowl and add olive oil, pepper, and optional salt and/or chili powder. Mix well.

Line a jelly roll pan with parchment paper and spray with cooking spray. Aluminum foil will not work as well or get as crispy. Use parchment paper if you can.

Place the fries on the parchment paper being careful not to overcrowd. This is a really important step. If you have to many fries, use additional jelly roll pans and rotate while cooking in oven.

Place fries in the preheated oven and bake for 15 minutes, then remove and flip. Place back in oven for an additional 15 minutes. When done turn the oven off and leave fries in while it cools for an additional 5-10 minutes (or to your preference).

Voila! Fries are ready. Serve with this low fat and calorie Chipotle Greek Yogurt Aioli for a delicious (and spicy) twist.

Crispy Baked Sweet Potato Fries

Ingredients

  • 2 medium sweet potatoes, cut into 1/4 inch thick slices
  • 2-3 tbsp corn starch
  • 2.5 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/4 tsp pepper
  • 1/4 tsp salt (optional)
  • 1/4 tsp chili powder (optional)
  • Cooking spray
  • Parchment paper

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F.
  2. Place cut sweet potato in large bowl, add cornstarch and use hands to mix cornstarch evenly on potatoes. Place fries in another bowl, shaking off any extra cornstarch and discard.
  3. Add olive oil to bowl and mix well. Then add pepper and optional chili powder and/or salt.
  4. Line a jelly roll pan with parchment paper. Spray with cooking spray and add fries to pan. Be careful not to overcrowd, and ensure space is left between fries.
  5. Bake for 15 minutes, remove from oven and flip fries. Place back in oven for another 15 minutes. Turn oven off and let fries get further crispy will oven cools for 5 minutes.

  1. These were very good! Ended up only baking one potato for the two of us as it made a lot. I also suggest letting them sit another 3-5 on the lined baking sheet after taking them out of the oven, in addition to the above, for extra “crispness” insurance. 🙂

  2. Maybe I’m just missing it but where does the olive oil mixture come into play? Is it for dip or are you supposed to spread it down before the fries, or top the fries off with it?

      Great question – after you shake the excess cornstarch off, you add the olive oil to the bowl with the sweet potato fries prior to putting them in the oven (mix well!) 🙂 . Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any additional questions.
