Chickpea Hazelnut Spread

Growing up I absolutely LOVED Nutella. I would put it on anything and everything, and even eat it straight out of the jar.

In reality it wasn’t until years later I actually realized how bad it was for you! Looking at the nutrition label, it is high in fat, sugar, and calories, and low in other nutrients. The first ingredient listed is sugar, and that tells you that there is more sugar in Nutella than anything else. What a bummer.

Well, get ready to fall in love with “Nutella” again. But this time, it will be much healthier for you, and it’s called Chickpea Hazelnut Spread.

This recipe uses chickpeas as a main ingredient. That’s right, CHICKPEAS! Chickpeas are awesome. Not to mention you can manipulate them into so many foods from sauces to sweets and not change the flavor. In addition, they are also a good source of protein and fiber.

Chickpea Hazelnut Spread

This recipe isn’t difficult, but it does involve a food processor and an oven. Firstly preheat an oven to 400°F. Then add the hazelnuts and roast for about 8 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool.

Use a tea towel to rub away the skins as much as you can and place in a food processor. Then add all other ingredients to the food processor. *NOTE* If you would like to use regular sugar, feel free to substitute that for the stevia.

Process until smooth. This can take between 3-6 minutes depending on the food processor used. If you prefer it more creamy, you can add oil or more milk. But this is not necessary and the taste is still amazing without!

When it is ready to eat, spread it on some toast with banana for breakfast. Of if you wish, let your inner child come out and eat it straight from the bowl (I know I did).

Keep refrigerated, and use up within four days (if it lasts that long).

Chickpea Hazelnut Spread


  • 1 cup hazelnuts
  • 1 cup chickpeas, cooked
  • 2 tbsp skim milk powder
  • 1/4 cup cocoa
  • 1/4 cup + 1 tbsp stevia (or sugar/alternative)
  • 3 tbsp milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract


  1. Preheat oven to 400°F. Place hazelnuts on a jelly roll pan and roast for 8 minutes. Remove from oven and use a cloth to remove as much of the shells as you can. Place in a food processor.
  2. Add all other ingredients to food processor. Pulse until smooth, will take about 3-6 minutes depending on processor/blender used. Keep refrigerated and use within four days.
