I don’t know about you, but I love me some apple pie. Sweet, decadent, delicious, ah it is just so darn good. In addition, it’s usually served with yummy frozen vanilla ice cream on top. My mouth is watering even thinking about it.
My grandma used to make this amazing apple pie when I was younger, and since then it has been one of my favorite desserts to eat. As a matter of fact, I wish I could eat it every single day.
It’s well known that apple pie’s contain a lot of added sugar, butter, and therefore calories. Together with the added ice cream, although delicious, is not a healthy dessert to have every day. On occasion yes, but everyday no.Want #ApplePie for #Breakfast? Try this #Healthy and #Easy #Apple #Pie #OvernightOatsClick To Tweet
In contrast, I have found a great alternative for apple pie that you actually can eat everyday, for real. This Apple Pie Overnight Oats has all of the flavor of your grandma’s apple pie, with far less sugar and fat. In addition, it is super easy to prepare and can be made a few days in advance if needed.
The main spices that make up the apple spice flavor are cinnamon, nutmeg and coriander. Cinnamon is a well known spice that comes from the inner bark of trees called Cinnamomum. Cinnamon has been around for centuries and was valued for it’s medicinal properties.
Cinnamon has high antioxidant capabilities and contains polyphenols. In addition, there has been a lot of research investigating positive effects of cinnamon on health health, diabetes, and inflammation. Overall it is a great spice to incorporate into our diets. Not to mention it tastes good too!
I used lower fat dairy products: 0% low fat greek yogurt and skim milk, however you can use higher fat dairy products if you prefer with no effects on the outcome. If you prefer another sugar or sweetener, you can easily substitute it for the honey.
To make the Apple Pie Overnight Oats, simply combine all ingredients together in a glass or mason jar and mix together. Either tightly saran wrap or close the jar with the mason jar lid.
Place in the fridge overnight for breakfast the next morning. Prior to serving, re-stir the oats to ensure all ingredients are evenly distributed. If needed, the oats can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days prior to serving. Enjoy!
